Linksys WET200 Wireless Bridge

March 22, 2008

I installed one of these for a client who needed to connect his Xbox 360 and Dish Network DVR to his wireless home network. Basically, it’s a 5 port switch that converts ethernet into wireless. You plug wired network devices into the WET200 and they can communicate with other other devices over a wireless network. It sells for around $120.

The 360 and the DVR were located in his basement near each other, and his wireless router (a Linksys WRT54G) was located on his first floor. Once I got the WET200 connected to his wireless network, I plugged the 360 and DVR into it and they were able to see everything else on his network. I did upgrade the firmware on the device before I did anything else.

Some guy on Newegg’s site was complaining about how cheaply  made it is, but I don’t agree with his comments. I didn’t find it cheap at all. This device offers a lot of advanced features (WPA/WPA2, VLANs, POE, SNMP, port mirroring, etc.) for such an inexpensively priced product. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs to convert multiple wired devices that are close together into wireless.

Here it is on the Linksys site.
